T-Guardian. La biennale 2013.
Here’s a new definition for “art on the move.” The “T-Guardian” sculpture, designed by artists Christoph Luckeneder and Manfred Kielnhofer, currently on a global tour of the world’s museums and exhibition spaces, has made its way to Venice for La Biennale—and it’s showing up in a new spot around the city each day. Luckeneder and Kielnhofer, both from Austria, have collaborated together before, most recently in a show at Gallery Liebau in Burghaun, Germany.
The T-Guardian piece, which depicts a cloaked red figure seated atop a metal cross covered in “spikes,” combines familiar forms from both artist’s body of works. Kielnhofer is known for his various depictions of the “Timeguard” figures, shrouded figures that recall themes from fantasy, mythology and the gothic. Luckeneder is known for his series of “light cactuses”—wire sculptures that play with various colors of light. Here, the two forms are juxtaposed, creating a new iconic, striking piece.

T-Guardians on art tour across at venice biennial by sculptor christoph Luckenender and artist Manfred Kielnhofer
Der T-Guardian und der Mini-T-Guardian waren vom 28. Mai bis 1. Juni 2013 in Venedig unterwegs. Über -zig Brücken, durch enge Gässchen und wiete Plätze ging die Tour quer durch Venedig. Hauptstationen waren die Rialto-Brücke, der Markusplatz, die Academia und die Biennale di Venezia. Einige wichtige Palazzi wie den Palazzo Bembo standen auch auf dem Programm. Der T-Guard und der Mini-T-Guard waren stets umringt von Menschentrauben. Es wurde fotografiert, bis die Kameras rauchten, die Ergebnisse sind grossteils sehenswert. Zumindest unsere. Einige davon im folgenden Beitrag.
Wir drei, das sind der T-Guard in der Mitte, Manfred rechts im Bild und der mit der blauen Regenjacke, das bin ich.
Brücke rauf, Brücke runter, eine sportliche Veranstaltung so eine Kunstaktion.
Die Motive am Canal Grande waren schier unerschöpflich. Hier in typischer Position neben den Gondeln.
Menschentrauben, wohin man schaut, hier am “Aufstieg” zur Rialtobrücke, und im Mittelpunkt der T-Guardian.
Am Abend leuchtete der T-Guard von innen her, was den Reiz noch erhöhte.
Das Bad in der Menge brachte kein Glück, die Polizei machte dem Spuk (vorübergehend) ein Ende.
Was hamma denn da? Ein Kunstwerk soll das sein? Und das wollen Sie auf dem Markusplatz abstellen? Und vielleicht auch noch fotografieren? Solche schiachen Trümmer hamma selber genug herumstehen. Also das Ding schleunigst zerlegen und raus damit aus unserer Stadt, aber dalli!
Da wird die “Costruzione delitti” von Manfred in Schlepptau genommen, aber nicht aus der Stadt hinaus, sondern bis zur nächsten Ecke. Und als die beiden Unideformierten ausser Sichtweite waren, wurde wieder fotografiert, was das Zeug hielt.
Motive, Motive, Motive. Immer wieder in neuen Positionen und in neuer Umgebung. Venedig ist da eine bildliche Goldgrube.
Auch er ist bei der Biennale allgegenwärtig: die sehenswerte Bronze-Kopf-Skulptur des Spaniers Jaume Plensa.
Abends auf der Brücke bei der Academia.
Und am Samstag, bei bestem Wetter, durfte auch der Kleine mit.
Nicht einmal die Polizei hat ihn verjagt am Markusplatz, obwohl schon wieder gesetzeswidrig abgestellt…
So eine alte Brücke macht sich gleich viel besser mit dem Mini-T-Guard.
Bekannte, die man trifft, stellen sich für ein Foto an: die Künstler Jernej und Marika aus Slowenien.

Tomorrow I am heading to the press opening day for the Venice Biennale that will run through to November 24th, and here is what I just cannot wait to see.
